The initial consultation seemed reassuring that this doctor was concerned and said that he would see me back in clinic following a scan and colonoscopy and also confirmed this in 2 letters saying that my problems would be assessed and discussed back in clinic to cover options regarding managing my bowel dysfunction. Instead I received a letter with details found in the scan of which I was unaware of , consequently upsetting. Despite many attempts to get an appointment via his secretary and the appointment team it was impossible to see anyone on the team anywhere. Upset and still struggling with pain I saw my doctor who explained all the issues found on the tests and who was not happy with the 2 letters saying that I would be seen back in clinic. My doctor managed to arrange an appointment to see Dr Penshal at Barrow Hospital, many miles from Silverdale but I needed help. This was a complete disaster as I never saw the consultant. A young man who was helping the consultant and never introduced himself spoke to me in a small treatment room , constantly leaving to ask the consultant for answers to my questions. On arrival the nurse had said that if you want to speak with the consultant that will be fine. I requested this but that didn`t happen. I asked the young man if I could see the scan and with some explainations. " Yes it`s your body" but this was not allowed. I asked if I could be referred to the gynaecology department but they don`t do this. So I left the treatment room upset and feeling unwell, uncared for and miss led by an apparently false consultant.
Mr Kaushal is an excellent consultant. He and his team have taken great care of me carrying out my follow up colonoscopies. One small worry I have is about two granulomas which were identified as requiring removal two years ago. Mr Kaushal referred me to the stoma nurse for removal with silver nitrate but they were too big and this didn't work. I was referred back to Mr Kaushal but didn't hear back. This was in Covid time so I knew I would probably have to wait. At my last colonoscopy in March of this year the person who carried it out said they couldn't remove the granulomas but said they did need removing as they were getting bigger. They also bleed when I change my bag.She referred me back to the the stoma nurse who spoke to me on the phone. Having seen the images of the granulomas the stoma nurse said that they were too big for removal with silver nitrate and she referred me back to Mr Kaushal for them to be surgically removed but I havent heard back. The treatment I have received over 15 years since my cancer diagnosis and recovery has been outstanding but the granulomas are becoming a problem for me and require removal as documented.
Mr. Kaushal put me at ease and explained things clearly in layman’s terms. He listened
to my questions and was patient and considerate.I left the consultation with clear
written notes on my future treatment which he speedily actioned.
In addition, I was impressed with all aspects of Furness Hospital and the friendly and helpful staff working there.
